Survive The Credit Crisis -
Review All Credit And Outgoings Today

You find yourself in a credit debt swamp, and the Newspaper headlines are yelling “America is in a credit crisis” then you begin to panic. Yet for some reason, unless you have a degree in finance, the reality of this “crisis” is not quite fully explained in laymen’s terms.

A credit crisis is when lending institutions raise interest rates to recoup losses from nonpayment and default accounts. This builds a buffer to offset those accounts that are in collections or in default. Basically this is saying that you are spending more than what you are earning. Therefore credit payments are not being met in a timely manner thus administering credit card companies and the like turn over accounts quicker to debt collection agencies.

How does this credit crisis affect you? Well the obvious and most direct effect is that you are going to damage your credit. Yes, this does seem like an overstatement but many people do not fully realize the impact this has on your financial future. This damage to your credit will create an avalanche effect on major and even minor credit based purchases. This scenario can cause great frustration not to mention higher than normal interest rates if and when you do get approved for credit. Even longevity at a job has no impact on your credit standing if you have made unwise spending decisions. And although you bring in an income of over $50,000.00 a year, that is still no guarantee that you will be approved.

So what does all this mean? Once the damage is done to your credit it is not irrevocable. You do not have to continue living in credit crisis, however, repairing your credit takes effort and diligence on your part. It does not just mean cut up the credit cards so you never use them again, you have to rethink how and where you spend your money. Even knowing why you spend money on certain purchases will help you gauge your spending trends. Sounds simple enough, yet things on paper usually do.

First and foremost if you are the type of person who is too tempted to utilize credit cards; by all means cut them up. However, having one credit card for emergency purposes only is a good idea. Keep that card in either a lock box at home or if you have to travel, only take it with you at the moment you walk out the door.

Second, pay more than the minimum payment due each month. You may be thinking “if I could have done that, I would not be in this mess.” Well, the long and short of it is, by this point you have already sat down and figured out your spending habits. Therefore the “extra” money is now coming from cutting out the three sodas a day and the daily lunch at your favorite restaurant. Therefore, the money that you would normally spend on those items is now used towards your credit debt.

What do you do when you have already cut out sodas and daily lunch runs and you are still in a credit crisis. Well, now is the time to take a look at your household expenses and cut where you feasibly can.

Look at your automobile insurance policy. Is your deductible at its highest rate? Do you need collision on both vehicles? Just these two items can greatly reduce your insurance premium. Also, take a drivers education or defensive driving course. Oftentimes insurance carriers will reduce your premium by ten percent when you turn in your completion certificate.

Even reducing the programming package for your television or eliminating the added features on your land phone will add money in your pocket. Granted in and of themselves the money you save may not be much, but combined you may be able to add an additional $50.00 to your credit debt payment.

Finally, try not to panic during this credit crisis. Keep in mind that your perseverance will pay off. Another point to keep in mind is that you did not reach this stage of credit crisis overnight. Therefore, you will not get out of debt overnight. You will become frustrated by not being able to purchase what you want when you want. However, you will also become more financially savvy as well as debt free.
